ABPN Principles for the Use of Artificial Intelligence

As artificial intelligence and other advanced computer technologies (hereafter, “AI”) are developed and used by the ABPN, all employees, directors, committee volunteers, and others engaged in the work of the ABPN must adhere to the following principles:

  • ABPN mission and values. All AI use must be in service to the ABPN mission and in keeping with ABPN values.
  • Human oversight and accountability. All AI use must have meaningful oversight by the people responsible for those functions and activities, who as always assume full responsibility for the work in their purview.
  • Security and privacy. All AI use must be done with ABPN-approved platforms and procedures to ensure the appropriate levels of security and privacy.
  • Transparency and fairness. As AI comes to be used in the service of ABPN’s assessments of candidates or diplomates, its uses must, to the degree reasonably possible:
    • demonstrate appropriate levels of reliability and validity
    • incorporate methods or processes to mitigate unintended biases
    • produce explainable outcomes
    • include clear disclosures
  • Ongoing quality improvement. Iterative quality improvement must be applied to the use of AI wherever and whenever possible.

NOTES

These principles apply prospectively as of the date of initial adoption.

These principles apply only to those involved in the work of the ABPN. They do not apply to examinees or others being assessed by the ABPN; AI use to support the development of instruments to assess specialty expertise is different from AI supplying the expertise being assessed.

AI means any large language model or other advanced computer technologies with comparable capabilities.
