Web pages not requiring login: The ABPN does not collect personally identifiable information from users of those parts of the ABPN’s website that do not require login, except for messages (e.g., emails or other electronic formats) sent to the ABPN. The ABPN retains such messages indefinitely, including the sender’s name, email address and any other information contained and/or imbedded in such messages. The ABPN regards such messages and the information contained therein as confidential and does not use or disclose it without the permission of the sender, except as in accord with the ABPN’s Privacy Statement and/or as necessary for the ABPN to carry out its initial certification or continuing certification processes and programs or to investigate possible violations of the ABPN’s legal rights, rules, policies or procedures. The ABPN also collects, evaluates and holds indefinitely other non-personally identifiable website use information and may use this information in accord with the ABPN’s Privacy Statement. In addition, the ABPN websites may place temporary cookies in the user’s browser during the use of the website.

Web pages requiring login: For those web pages requiring login, the ABPN requires detailed, personally identifiable information from users, which is retained indefinitely. The ABPN may require and/or a user may submit additional information, which is also retained indefinitely. In addition, the ABPN logs actions taken by users, including web pages visited, information entered, time spent on the site, and the IP address of the system which took the action. The ABPN may use all such information in accord with the ABPN’s Privacy Statement.

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s Privacy Statement

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) has adopted the following Privacy Statement applicable to the collection, use and disclosure of personal information that it may receive and maintain in the course of its business operations. The ABPN has developed, implemented, and maintains appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards for the personal information in its possession.

The ABPN considers the board certification status of individuals to be public information and the ABPN will publish and/or make available upon request an individual’s certification status. As such, the ABPN routinely reports and/or discloses, through its website or otherwise, an individual’s certification status. If an individual was previously certified by the ABPN, but no longer is certified by the ABPN, the dates of former ABPN certification will also be routinely reported and/or disclosed.

The ABPN also routinely provides a diplomate’s certification information and status as well as personal identifying information, including identifiers used to match records, to the American Board of Medical Specialties, to the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), and to other third parties the ABPN determines to be reasonable and in the interest of the ABPN to fulfill its mission and purposes.

In addition, the ABPN may provide personal information, including certification activities, to professional medical societies, associations and other entities and organizations that provide ABPN-accepted educational resources, services and/or products used for the certification and/or continuing certification programs. The ABPN may provide personal information and certification activities (e.g., information contained in an individual’s application for certification or continuing certification, individuals’ examination results, examination scores, and continuing certification activities) to entities conducting ABPN-approved research. In each case, the ABPN will require a written agreement requiring the recipient to treat the information confidentially in accordance with this Privacy Statement.

The ABPN provides residency and fellowship training programs personal identifying information, including information regarding the performance of the residency or fellowship training program’s former trainees on the ABPN’s examinations.

The ABPN may disclose information concerning the ABPN’s final determination, made in accordance with the ABPN’s published policies, that an individual has violated an ABPN policy or rule or whose certification was determined to be invalid. Such disclosures may be made to state medical licensing boards, the ABMS, other ABMS Member Boards, the FSMB, and other entities with a legitimate interest in a change in an individual’s certification status.

The ABPN may disclose information as required by law, including in response to a lawful subpoena, court order, or other compulsory legal process.

The ABPN may disclose all non-privileged, relevant information about a candidate, applicant, and/or diplomate in its possession upon written authorization from the specific candidate, applicant and/or diplomate.

Information concerning an individual’s request for testing accommodations, and any supporting documentation or other information concerning an individual’s health, is maintained confidentially and is used or disclosed only as necessary to evaluate and administer accommodations, including by the ABPN’s testing vendors, as required by law, or with the individual’s written authorization. Such information is not provided for research purposes.

Changes to this Privacy Statement:

The ABPN reserves the right to update or change this Privacy Statement at any time. The ABPN will post the current Privacy Statement on this website at this link.
