Dr. Magen is Chair, Department of Psychiatry in the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. He was formerly residency training director in the department. Prior to entering psychiatry, he was a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service, serving as a General Medical Officer in the Indian Health Service.

He is certified by the ABPN in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry and is participating in continuing certification. Dr. Magen served on the Executive Council of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Education. He is a past president of the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry, of the Michigan Psychiatric Society and of the American Osteopathic College of Neurologists and Psychiatrists. He was a director of the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. He was a representative from the training directors and chairs groups to the AAMC Council of Faculty and Academic Societies and is a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists. He served as Vice Chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Psychiatry.
