Dr. Brooks-Kayal is Professor and Chair of Neurology, and the Andrew John Gabor, MD, PhD Presidential Endowed Chair at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine in Sacramento, CA. Previously, she was Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she served as Chief and Ponzio Family Chair in Pediatric Neurology for 12 years. She was a principal investigator and co-director of the Translational Epilepsy Research Program at University of Colorado. Dr. Brooks-Kayal is recognized as an international expert in the field of epilepsy and has received an American Epilepsy Society (AES) Founders Award, a Child Neurology Society (CNS) Bernard Sachs Award, and was named an Ambassador for Epilepsy by the International League Against Epilepsy in recognition of her record of lifetime achievement in the field of epilepsy.

She is certified by the ABPN in Epilepsy and Neurology with Special Qualifications in Child Neurology and participates in continuing certification. As an ABPN Director, Dr. Brooks-Kayal serves on the Neurology Council and several ABPN committees. She is also the ABPN liaison to the AES, the Association of Academic Leaders of Neurology (AALN, formerly Association of University Professors of Neurology), and the American Neurological Association (ANA).

Dr. Brooks-Kayal currently serves on the Executive Committee of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders (NINDS) Child Neurology Career Development (K12) Program, on the External Advisory Board (EAB) for the NINDS Epilepsy Therapy Screening Program and as Associate Editor for Epilepsy for the Annals of Neurology. She was previously President of AES, councilor of the ANA, AUPN and Professors of Child Neurology (PCN), and a member of the NINDS Advisory Council.
