Clinical Activity Status

In 2012, ABPN began allowing physicians to self-designate whether they are clinically active or clinically inactive. If you are clinically active, you will need to complete the Improvement in Medical Practice (PIP) requirement every three-year block of the Continuing Certification Program by utilizing the many existing options described in the PIP section of this website.

  1. Active – Physicians who are treating patients and are engaged in direct and/or consultative care sufficient to complete the PIP activity. These diplomates need to complete the PIP requirement.
  2. Active, not enough for PIP – Physicians who are active, but are primarily in research, academic, or administrative roles insufficient to complete the PIP requirement. These diplomates do not need to complete the PIP requirement.
  3. Inactive – Physicians who are not clinically active (i.e. medical leave, not practicing). These diplomates do not need to complete the PIP requirement.

Diplomates must update their Clinical Activity Status in the Physician Portal Certifications section.
