Articles and Research About the Value of Board Certification

  • ABPN President and CEO Dr. Jeffrey Lyness and Dr. Graham T. McMahon, President and CEO of the ACCME, recently published an article on the rationale behind the ABPN Continuing Certification Program in Academic Medicine. In the article, “The Role of Specialty Certification in Career-Long Competence,” Drs. Lyness and McMahon outlined the limitations of physician self-evaluation and explained the unique role and value that specialty board continuing certification plays in medicine.

  • The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) recently released a review of ABMS member board continuing certification programs, which includes an overview of studies examining their value: “A Narrative Review of the Development and Outcomes of ABMS Member Board Continuing Certification Programs, 2000-2024.” This narrative is available on the ABMS website along with other materials; together, they summarize the substantial evidence that ABMS member board certification is associated with improved patient safety and other patient outcomes, lower health care costs, and lower risk of physician disciplinary actions.
  • The ABMS works to ensure that board certification supports physicians’ learning and improvement needs, while educating the public, health organizations, and medical associations about the value of certification and the high standards the medical profession holds itself to through certification.
